mike | Why don't all the people in the UK refuse to pay electricity bills? |
at the present time electricity prices are controlled by shareholders in search of high profits,if all people in the UK refused to pay these inflationary prices the energy company's would have to re- think their policy's |

That theory could be applied to anything; stop shopping at Tesco until they sole decent food etc. The problem is it's not quite bad enough to start a revolution. By and large we don't have it bad in the UK, if you think about. It's just it could be so much better. |

because they would cut off the supply, as taking something without paying for it is stealing |

Where have you been living? No-one refuses to pay anything in the UK! We are a load of sheep. |

Don't be silly .. in a Capitalist system prices are controlled by the balance of supply and demand... the cost of supply depends on the cost of the raw materials ..i.e. Gas and Oil ..
In any 'sane' system, as raw material prices increased, cheaper sources of supply would enter the market ...
However in UK, the supply is controlled by the Government (who prevented the construction and development of cheap power generating Nuclear power stations (the French are not suffering massive prices increases .. but then 60% of French power supply is Nuclear) whilst placing massive Taxes on North Sea Oil (to the extent they discouraged further exploration) and promoting the massively expensive 'wind farms' etc).
Just like petrol, part of the price you are paying for electricity is Tax (in this case 'Carbon Tax' ha ha ..)
Anyway, to answer your 'headline' question .. customers of a service either pay their bills or the service is withdrawn (ie. you pay or get cut-off)
If people stopped using so much electricity the suppliers would stop buying so much from the generators and the more expensive / less efficient generators would go bust.
This would ensure we get the 'best' prices, however we would still be using a mainly gas / oil power stations, so end user prices will still reflect the rising price of fuel Oil & Gas ..
I suggest you start with a course in Communism followed by one in recent history (the collapse of the Soviet system) so you can start to understand the alternatives. |

Probably because no one wants to get cut off or have to pay late payment fees or get into a muddle by not paying monthy. I have yet to notice a difference and i had this years bill in last week. I am in credit with them and have been for the same amount for last few years. Southern electric customer. |

as in Britain, we are far too honest for our own good!!!! also not a lot of people realise that this is why the prices are rising |

Bit simplistic, don't you think? If everyone refused to pay their bills, where would the money come from to keep the system running so that people can use electricity? The price is controlled by the price of the fuel used to make electricity, and the companies have no control over that.
Electricity has to be generated. If you want to come off the grid, get yourself a wind turbine or solar panels and make your own. Or get a generator and run it on bio-diesel from your old cooking oil. There are plenty of websites that can tell you how to do this. Here's just one of them.
http://www.electricitybook.com
You can save money by wearing more clothes indoors in winter, hanging out washing instead of using the tumble dryer, (although you could be excused this summer, considering the weather we've had) using energy saving light bulbs, cooking more than one meal at a time in the oven and using the microwave to heat them up later, and ONLY boiling enough water in the kettle for your immediate use. As the price of oil rises, so will the price of electricity. Get used to it, because the oil price will never be cheap again. |
