Lion of Judah | Why is Medicare being taken out of my paycheck if I dont even use that stuff? |
Can't I opt out or something? Additional Details well I wont be elderly for another like 40 years. Can't I just opt out now and start paying it like 30 years from now or something? |

that is how the elderly and the sick get medicare; sadly, by the time we get there (most of the working force which should be paying into the medicare program will not be as able to do so because many will have destroyed huge amount of their brain cells, have dropped out of school, or will be in prison. So sit back and let Obama take from the rich (oh yea your not rich) and give to the poor--that is what he meant with sharing the wealth--just wait when you get more taxes out from you paycheck to cover the new system (welfare-like Obama is going to implement); you know 95% will be getting some money from the 5% of the Rich Americans.
God bless America and help Obama make good choices. |

For the same reason that childless property owners pay property taxes, a large chunk of which goes to support public schools.
For the same reason motorists pay a federal fuels tax, even though a portion goes for mass transit which they may not use.
For the same reason you're paying Social Security (FICA), even though you don't qualify for Social Security yet.
For the same reason you pay income taxes, some of which go to build "bridges to nowhere."
Because your federal or state legislators have determined that a program serves the public interest, and that there's justification for taxing people even though they may not currently benefit from the program. Some such programs are easier to justify than others.
No, you can't opt out. Your recourse is to work to change the law.
Hope that helps. |

You probably *will* use it. Medicare is medical insurance for when you're retired. |

No. It is just a payroll tax. You cannot opt out of it. |

Nope, you are stuck paying it like the rest of us. It is for the current people that use it, kind of like Social Security tax. The sad thing is, when it is time for us to retire after paying into it,Social Security money will not even exist. |

Because you will use it when you are old. They also take out social security, which you aren't using right now, but you will when you are old. If it is still there. No you cannot opt out. |

This is a nationally paid for system of care, like Social Security. All younger workers pay into the system. When you are older, you will be able to draw out of it and other, younger workers will pay for you. That's how it works. That's how it's always worked, from the time it started. No, you can't opt out of paying into it. When you become elderly, if you decide not to use it, you may opt out of that. But I doubt that you will. It's that way with Social Security too, pretty much. However, if you are rich enough and make enough money in a year, at some point you stop paying into Social Security -- a rule that makes no sense to me. It seems to me that the rich ought to pay the most since they derive the greatest benefits from society. But it's mostly the richest folks who become congressmen and make the rules. |

If you start paying for it in 30 years you will not have enough money paid into it to pay your medical bills later. That is why they take out so little money now. |
