Auntie Cabbage | Why is being a single parent this profitable?!? |
I've just been on the website www.entitledto.co.uk to see how much better off I would be, if I was a single parent. (I'm not, nor do I wish to be on principle).
If my partner and I were to split up, and I lived on my own with our kids (we have one 10 month old, and one on the way in 7 weeks) I would get a 2 bed flat. I would have my full rent paid by housing benefit, and full council tax paid too. I would then be 'awarded' income support for myself, and child tax credits and child benefit for the kids.
All in all, disregarding the housing benefit, I would have an income of £723.64 a month WITHOUT tax. That would pay bills, and pay for the kids.
I would also be entitled to: Free prescriptions, Free milk/fuit + veg tokens the value of which would be £8.40 a week.
Where is the incentive to work and stay together as a couple?! As a couple, in work we get much less than that now!! What logic is this?!! Additional Details At a maximum my bills would be -
My mobile - £25 a month
Sky TV/Broadband/Phoneline - £37 a month
Gas & Electricity - £100 a month
Water - £20 a month.
That's it. That's a grand total of £182 a month, out of £723. That leaves £541 a month. If I spend £50 a week on food that leaves £300 a month on what exactly?!! What?!!!! |

Heh you have such a good point.
I am actually a single mum, and I claim benefits but my son is autistic and had to give up my job, so not all of us single parents are claiming because we can, my son's previous nursery kicked us out cos they didn't want to deal with his autism. I am currently training to be an aerobics instructor so I can teach aerobics and pole dancing in any gym in the country. I want to work as I would like to provide for my lovely little boy. Unlike my neighbours who have 4 kids between em and can't be arsed to do any work. |

Although I do agree with you to an extent, it is not quite as cut and dried as all that.
For a start it is almost impossible to 'get a 2 bed flat'. When my husband and I split up I was told I would have to get a flat myself as a waiting list for a property could take over a year. Therefore I had to borrow money from job centre plus, which was repayed 4 weekly, and deducted from my income support.
Also, it is unlikely that you would get all of your housing benefit paid for you. In most cases you have to 'top up' your rent, as the councils in this country don't tend to agree with the rent levels that landlords ask for (nor do most tenants in all fairness, but just have no choice!!) Also the tokens did not add up to £8.40 per week.
I can assure you that when I was on income support, I did not get £723.64, and I have 2 kids! What I have noticed though, is that I was better off on income support than I am now, which is why I agree with you that there is no incentive for couples to stay together etc.
Edit: Also there are a lot of theories which lean towards the idea that there are so many low lifes and thugs because parents are too busy focusing on their careers rather than their children. They just end up terrorising people, out of control. Just food for thought.
Not all single mum's are scum, far from it. Guaranteed most of them will start work again, or go to college as I did (most of the people on my course were single mums trying to get off benefits). |

That's for single parents who don't work.
Some of us do, you know - so stop labelling people. |

If your children were the same sex and under 5, the council can put you in a 2 bedroom house.
But surely it makes you feel better, to support your children on your own. Not allowing me and other tax payers to support them. |

I am in a similar situation to sprocket, my partner has 3 children to his former wife, we seem skint while she is better off!
I would be better off alone, but alas we are happy lol! Never mind, our rewards will come in time. |

PinHead

kinda says it all methinks, makes you wonder why any of us bother working, there is no incentive for people to get off the dole |
|

Where's that pesky fraggle?
|
I know, it doesn't really tally with the government's ideal of family values they so much like to promote does it?
My partner has 2 children from a previous relationship and whilst she (his ex-partner) is not single, she is not cohabiting so is classed as single. She gets miles more than we do - she goes abroad (without the kids) around 4 times per year, lives in a large housing association property - OK she does work but she still gets decent tax credits etc etc etc.
We get nothing! We rent privately - a flat which is both very expensive and not large enough for our growing family (by that I mean the shared care of his children and we have one on the way) Unless we split or I choose not to return to work (not an option on principle as well as finance!) we are still not entitled to anything! (we both work in the social care sector so are not on a fantastic wage!)
Begs belief really, where is the incentive to work and do well for yourself and your family?? It feels like the harder you try to make ends meet the less help you can get!
I am still stunned by your figures though! I never knew it was that much! |

I have to agree that yes you would be better off on your own with the kids but only for financial rewards. I have a friend who would have liked to have worked, but just as you say, we worked it all out and if she were to do my job, which she could and has done, I even had one lined up for her but she would have ended up in real terms of working for what amounted to one pound an hour! So on the face of it you cant blame people for staying on benefits, I am wishing that I were right now, and yes I have been a single parent and it aint all that bad so there! |
