Because our government is greedy, by rights it should be cheaper because diesel from most pumps is made up with at least 5% cooking oil, bet you didn't know that! |

It hasn't always .. I remember when diesel was much cheaper (only a couple of years ago). The upside is that diesel gives you at least a third more mileage to the gallon and does not emit emiisions in the same way as petrol - so much more environmentally friendly. And you can convert to cooking oil now (but don't count on being able to top up on the M1)!!! |

believe theres less world diesel refinery capacity therefore it has a scarcity compared to petrol,the government could help also by reducing duty....but earns too much to care |

government set higher tax on diesel when it was decided that diesel emmisions were more damaging to the environment than they first thouht, well that was the line the govt used. |

Purely Tax. Diesel used to be much cheaper than petrol in the seventies and there were not many diesel cars. As soon as diesel engines became popular they increased the tax levied on it - just as they will if gas catches on. |

Because the government know it's the fuel used by heavy goods vehicles, of which there are thousands necessary for almost all haulage (let's face it they b***ered up the railways years ago..and as more people were buying diesel cars for better fuel economy, the greedy so and so's upped the price.;;I live in France where diesel is the cheapest fuel, because the French government knows that no HGV transport means major problems..;there are also probably as many diesel cars on the road here as petrol...but a lot has to go down to the people in Britain...they won't stick together over anything...when there was a petrol strike in the UK a few years ago, you got nothing...in fact 5 days after it finished, BP put their prices up by just over 4 pence a litre...here's the difference...when the French had a strike over diesel prices two weeks before britain, the country was brought to it's knees, because everyone backed it...when it finished, fuel prices were frozen for 6 months, and vehicle road tax was abolished...I'm english, and I know how much the media and a lot of people over there critice (wrongly) the french...but who do you think has got it right? |
