Why is family allowance paid to rich people who don`t need it?
And, in order to stop its abuse, why isn`t a portion of it paid in clothing and footwear tokens? I heard some people putting this viewpoint forward the other day and wondered what Q/A `s opinions were?

It is available to all as it is non means tested. I think the token idea is a very good one!

Who says they don't need it? They have in fact paid more taxes than the poor, so conversely, why should the rich subsidise the poor and worse still the freeloaders.

Because they pay more in taxes and NI so therefore they are probably more entitled.

it is a universal benefit intended to help all children...the rich often do not claim it...David Cameron doesn't...if some of it was paid in clothing and footwear tokens some children would go hungry as the money is needed for food...I use all mine for food and wouldn't want the government telling me how to spend it.

It would cost a lot more to administer it as a means tested benefit because people would have to be employed to decide who was elligible. I have no problem with clothing and footwear tokens.

reggie
It's paid to everyone because it's non means tested. Bit outrageous to suggest that it should be paid in tokens - you'll be saying that income support should be tokens too next. Don't confuse poverty with ignorance, they don't necessarily go hand in hand

Family allowance is a non means tested benefit and is paid according to how many under 18's live in the household. It was introduced to encourage people to have children and also to assist with the up keep of those children. It is not compulsory to claim it, but like everything in life, every little helps, so most people do claim it irrespective of status, however, some people donate theirs to charity. Most rich people pay their dues through higher taxes and more taxable activities, which more than make up for the non means tested allowances they may obtain from the Govt.

As for your point about paying a portion in clothing/footwear tokens - This would depend on what portion, as most of the allowance is usually used on food and other essentials; I don't think it would actually go down well, even with those that need it most, telling them how and what to spend it on. Tokens are also subject to abuse and can easily be counterfeited.

Just because they earn more don't mean they don't need help. People who earn more also tend to spend more. Those on £35,000 a year also tend to have higher morgages payments, higher living expenses, larger cars etc... They may earn more but they will most likely also owe more and have larger outgoings. So they to may need the £80 a month to survive in there lifestyle. It's no ones business what child beenfit is spent on and though in theory it should be used to pay for kids, some people will need it to go towards rent (like me) towards food, towards school lunches etc. Limiting what a parent can spend what there legally entitled to is wrong, yes its meant to help pay for kids but these kids also need a roof over there heads and food in there belly. So long as there kids are feed its no ones business what the money goes towards.

I'm a rich person and I don't get any, because I don't have a family.

Not having a family is the reason I'm rich. Each child costs about £200,000 to bring up. Work it out.

Well, how else are they supposed to pay the illegal immigrants they use to babysit - not from their own pockets, surely

everyone gets family allowance, whether they require it or not.

which is ironic, the rich get it but dont need it, and the poor, who need it, get it taken away if they go onto benefit...

yes, they give you CB, but its classed as income by the benefit agency, and you lose it...

blackpool lass
hiya, the rich people would be up in arms if they did not get it.they don't like losing a penny let alone family allowance.the rich are so tight.

It is a non means tested benefit and to be honest it should be totally scrapped, not just for "rich people".
