Chipmunk_Cheeks | Why is it so easy to be unemployed in the UK? |
To anyone who is signing on the dole at the moment, why do they make it so easy?
I thought the idea was to put you off by constantly pressuring you into getting ANY job going, but I went to my fortnightly signing on and this is a typical conversation:
Job Advisor: So how's it going?
Me: Fine
Job Advisor: OK, see you in two weeks time.
Kerching! lol Additional Details Some great answers, just wanted to point out that I've recently graduated and am feeling extremely cynical about anything to do with the Government and I'm just simply amazed by how relaxed the whole dole system is.
Perhaps I'll find one of those imaginary graduates jobs that starts at £18k lol |

I am lucky i have a full time job, but i do think sometimes it is too easy to sign on and not work, it annoys me cos some people do want a job but can't find anything, my daughter was out of work for 3 months and could not get any dole money at all because she left her original job, she applied for so many jobs but no employers hardly got back to her,she has now moved to cyprus and got work, i think the ones that don't want to work should be made to clear streets of rubbish etc. to earn thier dole money, least i will know where my taxes are going |

I lost my job in December after slogging my **** off at Uni to get qualified to work for the NHS... I worked at my local hospital in the relevant department whilst studying, for 3 years... I qualified and 2 months later funding was withdrawn...
When I found myself at Job Center after three months of job rejections and having spent everything I had saved...I was left to my last resort.....to get job seekers allowance it was horrible, really humiliating. After a detailed grilling from the women, we decided I was entitled to £40 p/w... I hated going there.. Like you said.
Them: 'got a job yet?'
Me: 'No'
Them: 'Oh well, good for you for coming in'
I twice went to 'sign on' all the while not actually receiving any payments while i was processed... luckily I managed after applying to literally everywhere within distance of my house I got a job, an hours drive away, where I still am... after applying for state help, after 14 phone calls, along the lines of...
Me: 'I cant afford to put petrol in my car to come sign on...
them 'well take a bus'
Me: 'the bus isnt free...'
Them: 'can you walk in?'
Me: 'I live 15 miles away'
Them: 'oh dear'
round and round... I got my money... But it wasnt easy for me...The job centre treat you like you've got some tropical disease and want you in and out asap...I was repulsed to see teenage boys there, having a laugh, getting their money and seemingly not making any effort. Yet for me, It was near impossible. I will never ever go through that again, I'd rather starve and nearly did...
I wanted them to help me, as I didnt know what to do, they just didnt care...The government say unemployment is falling..If it is its not because of the useless job center (in my town at least)
This is not an opinion..This is my experience...If any job center workers are offended, Im sorry, But I was so desperate and not getting anything in return..Not even a bloody smile! |

Because for some peaple, its easier to sign on than it is to find a job, but when you see the jobs advertised, there are MANY Jobs in the UK.
The UK Government tries to help those who genuinly can't find work, or who are unable to work, but too many people abuse the system. |

I work in a Jobcentre & must say one of the worst jobs is signing.
They must see approx 30-40 customers per day, yes your all called customers funny I know!
Can you imagine having to say the same thing this many times everyday, 5 days a week.
Yes they should do a job search with you & check what you've been doing yourself but don't really have the time because theres always the next person waiting creating a fuss.
As for making you get any job is that really benefical to anyone, seems to me you've got the brains to find a job, don't need any hand holding or do you? |

the truth of the matter is what jobs. most British industry is being sent abroad and so is call centres. companies are employing more people from the EU to do some jobs such as bus driving. plus the majority of todays youth dont want to work any way. the job centre workers are fighting a losing battle so most of them dont care any more. |

Yeah my brothers wife lost her job at a factory and they dicovered it was cheaper for her to stay out of work and look after the kids than go to work and lose all the tax credit. |

Your crazy if you think Britain's welfare system is kind or easy.
In fact, Britain's welfare system for the enemployed poor is 'criminally' insufficient and the least generous in the Western world. Even Ireland and Spain pay out much more money to their unemployed than the U.K. British people are the most stingy and selfish people in the E.U.
Take a look at the following article and ask yourself why a rich country such as the U.K. is not protecting her unemployed well.
