Because the Government realised it gives more mpg and more people are now buying diesel motors. Used to be a lot cheaper than petrol in the 90s. They grab it from us every which they can.

Diesel engines have more efficiency than gas engines to the same power so Diesel engine save fuel and they are less polluting.

Diesel is more heavily taxed in the UK than petrol.
I spend quite a lot of time in France and always make sure I fill up on diesel at the ferry port before returning to England.
