Why is it that we are double taxed ?
I am doing a report on school work. My question is why is it when you purchase a item like a new car for example you are taxed a percentage and lets say you buy a used car the tax has already been applied by the first person who bought the car and then you need to pay the same tax twice same applies for your pay check you are being taxed already by the federal and state you go to a store and buy items you use your money that already has been taxed to purchase a item which again is taxed so you end up paying more for the item if you break down the math. This is open questions on this matter..........

While you are taxed many times under various tax laws, this does not amount to "double taxation." The tax dollars paid on your income are already gone. You don't spend those dollars on anything, taxable or otherwise, since you no longer have them. Therefore sales, property or other taxes do not constitute double taxation since they're paid with the remaining untaxed or after tax dollars after you've paid your income taxes.

In the case of a car, you are not paying a Sales Tax unless you are the original buyer of a new car. The buyer of a used car pays a Use Tax for the priviledge of operating the car on the State's public roads. In most states the Use Tax rate is the same as the Sales Tax rate, compounding the confusion somewhat. But since the taxes are paid by different people, i.e. each owner in turn, it is NOT double taxation.

In fact, there is only ONE true case of double taxation in the US and it is somewhat tenuous at best. If you are a shareholder in a corporation you indirectly pay taxes on the corporate income. Then when that income is distributed to you as dividends you pay personal income tax on those dividends.

Please ignore the political rant. He seems to forget that although taxes rose during the Clinton administration, real spendable income (i.e. after taxes) ROSE to the highest levels in decades AND he left office with a budgetary surplus, the first in nearly 40 years. If you have plenty of money in your pocket, who really cares about taxes? We all know what happened once he left office -- the largest spending deficit in the history of the nation, larger than all prior administration's deficits COMBINED. Big Oil and the wealthy got fat tax breaks, the rest of us working stiffs got crumbs.

Those are not good examples of double taxation.

Well first off each state has different rules and budgets. In the case of income tax, not all states have it. For example, NH has no income tax or sales tax. However, they have very high property tax in order to pay for their schools and programs. In MA, there is income tax and sales tax, and, well, I guess the property tax isn't that great either but better than NH.

The federal government takes your tax for federal programs, such as the military and various social programs. The state takes your tax for things like roads, schools, and infrastructure. Your town taxes you on property to pay for, again, schools and various local projects.

You are probably not just double taxed, but triple and quadruple taxed. However, if you want an army, good public schools, roads that you don't have to pay tolls for, and so forth, the money has to come from somewhere.

Double taxation is a rhetorical gimmick to convince the general public that the tax system is unfair.

The truth of the matter is that you are not paying a tax on the item, you are paying a tax on the transaction of purchasing the item.

Don't forget this one:

If you pay TOO much in taxes and get a return, they tax you on that return the next year, although IT WAS MONEY THAT YOU ALREADY PAID IN TAXES!!!!

Now that is double taxing.

Because of LIBERALS in government and their despicable Democrat party.

If one gets in this time, you'd better head for the hills. A recession is already predicted and they'll finish us off. Taxes and hidden taxes will be raised so that your family may be crying and you won't be able to feed them. Close down the Democrat party.
