Happily Ever Us!
Why is it when you're single...no kids...you pay a ton in taxes!!! UGH!?
No wonder people are having kids like rabbits!! :( I think you should get a tax break if you--wait until you wed to have kids...it seems like the government $crews people who try to follow order! Sorry--I had to vent!! Kids to me are not a meal ticket!

I'm not ripping on single parents--I'm talking about the people that have children merely to get freebies and breaks from the State!

When you are no longer single and have children of your own, you will get your payback.

If you stay single and don't have kids, Thank you for your support of a better society.

I don’t have kids yet, but it’s because they’re a huge financial drain. For at least 16 years, parents are paying 100% of their kids’ expenses. Little moochers! :-)

By the way, being married without kids doesn’t give you a break and can raise your taxes over what each of you would have paid as singles combined. It’s called the “Marriage Penalty.”

Doctor Deth
if you're single and no kids - you should have plenty of money to spend that you don't need lower taxes - you can live in a smaller apt/house, less food costs with only yourself

I feel your pain. What bothers me most is that because I'm single I end up paying more toward children's educations then their parents do, even if we both make the same income since they get a tax break. So not fair.

riddance86
because that's the way the mile-long tax-code is written. 98% of the taxes are paid by the top 2% of the population...

When you have kids, its an expensive proposition. They need to be fed. They need clothes. They need healthcare. They need education. They need care and love.

As a father, I can tell you that there are all kinds of additional expenses that one incurs when one has children.

Congress decided a long time ago to recognize that having children means extra expenses, and they recognized this by providing an additional exemption for a child, as well as a child tax credit. That's how congress did it's part to help support families.

There are some people who use kids as a meal ticket, but I don't think they're in the majority. It's not so much that if you're single you have to pay more. If you're single, you pay what you're supposed to pay. If you have kids, you get a bit of a break from Congress.

If you think kids save you money, you've got a lot to learn.

I have to agree with Scotty Knows..
I am a new Mom.. and this is the first year we are able to claim our son as a dependent. It helped tremendously with getting a hefty refund, but I did not have my son just to get a "meal ticket" as you put it. A child is VERY expensive.. just simple things you use weekly for a baby are expensive. So whether you get the free "meal ticket" or not.. you will still have to spend the money on your child's expenses. You shouldn't be so judgemental on parents.. I was fine with my refund before I had my son.
As a single person, there are a lot of things you can do to make the most of your refund at tax time.. you just have to be savvy and know how to do it. A lot of research is involved. Tax preparers are not all what they are cracked up to be either.. some of them don't catch every deduction you could have gotten. If you are upset about parents getting refunds.. then you should try to research taxes a little bit and I bet you would get more out of your refund, as well. Best Wishes!
