Why is sales tax in the US not included in the listed price?

Actually it's the law. Most states, if not all, prohibit sales tax to be included in the price of goods or services. It's a disclosure issue, mainly because sales tax use to be deductable from your federal taxes (and still can be ). So, if you're deducting you're sales tax you need to know how much sales tax is included in each transaction.

Because, when you pick items off the shelf, the store wants to show you the lowest price so you'll buy more. Only after you've set your mind to buying it, muled it to the front of the store, and waited in long lines to they show you real price.

If you think it's a good idea, then how about extending it. People should see the total price if they put it on a credit card and only make minimum payments.

Sales tax is the tax you pay on the money you spend. SO when you buy something the listed price is what you are paying for that product or service. It just so happens you also have to pay a tax on the amount of money that you spent. The sales tax does not go into the profit that the business gets. They have to turn around and give the same amount that you pd for sales tax to the state.

Arbitrage
Because then the companies can show a lower listing price on the menu or whatever, which entices the customer to buy. It's a marketing thing, just like listing a product for 2.99.

My best guess is that this makes it easier on retailers when you get to the checkout. Different items have different tax rates, and in many cases different counties within each state have different tax rates. States also have different tax rates. It's probably easier to calculate the tax when you check out rather than list it in the price for the item on the shelf, which probably involves less effort and paperwork on the retailers' part. Also, if tax rates changed, they'd have to change all the price labeling on the shelves which could cost them money in terms of labor. As with anything in retail, it (probably)boils down to being cheaper for the retailer.

to make you think you can afford it

question_ahoy
Sales tax is added by the state and/or other municipal bodies where the item is sold. It varies by where it's being collected. Some sales, such as some online sales or, in certain states, sales of certain goods such as food, are not taxed. Probably because of these differences in amounts and what's eligible for tax, the system in the United States is to collect tax at the time of sale rather than have a value-added tax that's included in the sale price, as is common in other countries.

It is the obligation of the consumer to pay the tax, and not the obligation of the merchant.
