nicolefrenzy | Why is tax credits based on previous yrs earnings? |
because last year (tax yr) we both worked this current tax year i have not worked so we struggle with money because tax credits give us what we would have gotten if i worked why do they base it on the previous yr does that mean people struggle financially? |

Anything done by HMRC can only be based on last year's figures, because that is the only information currently held until the employer's return for this year is sent in after the end of the tax year, which is also the start of the new tax year. It applies to everything, tax credits, self-employed payments on account, PAYE code numbers. There is always provision for you to request adjustments be made. |

So the admin get as clear as possible a set of figures to complete their assessment.
It could be tied into the PAYE system, but it would mean that recipients would always be paid in arrears. And there would be no guarantee as to the amount paid, as earnings fluctuate. |

If you contact them then they'll do a re-assessment for you.......eventually.They really are a pain when it comes to doing anything. They're 2nd only to the CSA for incompitancy. They either leave you short or massively overpay you and leave you with nothing the next year. |

Its because its the only TRUE figure they have to work with.
If you ring them, to tell them your circumstances have changed, they may make an adjustment this year...
No harm in trying. |

this eefects so many ppl, and i am in the same boat so sympathise with you..... i was told when this came into force it was to stop false claims..... over claming...etc..
many ppl used to work over time and not declare it, and when the renewal was due for the six week build up would work over time in order to gain full tax credits and after would carry on, they say this was bleeding the system dry, and put this new force into action, but unfortunately ppl like us suffer because of ppl like that |

They are terrible and nearly everyone i know that claims tax credits has suffered because of underpayments or having to pay back overpayments, myself included. No wonder so many just stay on benefits! |

Bureaucracy has ways of delaying payment and taking unecessarily long time to do things.
On another level, the tax office would like to recieve your tax payments before issuing the credits. This allows them to have more fluidity and keeps you nearer the bottom of their list of priorities.
It's a way of them keeping the control and make things work for them rather for the people. As part of the public, they expect you to be self sufficient and to look after yourself, whilst they tax everything you earn (it's pessimistic but seems very real).
Why do you think they impose penalties the minute you fail to hand in your tax payments? Why don't you think there is a deadline to paying your tax credits?
If you're having problems with your finances, I suggest joining a reputable, moderately cheap and reliable network marketing scheme (not the sort that tells you to sell to your friends and families).
Good luck |

It's so they know exactly what you earned and so what you are given is not based on a prediction of what you will earn. However, if it is causing you financial hardship you should contact them to be re-assessed. Are there any other benefits you might be entitled to but are not claiming, for example income support? I hope this is some help, the whole system is completely flawed! |

You can't be paid tax credits for money that you haven't yet earned. The system is not entirely fair, but better than nothing. It is worth paying a visit to the tax office rather than phoning as you won't be fobbed off. Take all relevant details with you, see what happens. |
