War is Peace?
Why is the IRS penalizing people for being intelligent?
Every year I calculate my taxes so I have to pay a very small amount on April 15th. With over 50k a year in income this is no small feat however I think it is worth it so I can invest and save the money that otherwise my company would withhold in limbo during the course of the year.

For 2007 I paid 80 bucks, however, I was told by the IRS today that since my bank account was directed DEBITED instead of direct deposited I would have to wait at least an extra 6 weeks for my stimulus check.

Is this yet another example of how the IRS is waging war upon the middle class? The rich don't have to pay taxes and the poor get the government to hand them everything. Meanwhile I act in a smart and responsible manner and get penalized for it.

Simply ridiculous.

Depending on the tax software you used, you could have provided the direct deposit information to the IRS, which would have given them the permission to deposit into your account.

Here's what the IRS had to say on the subject (removed from their website early last week:):
"Q. I chose direct debit to pay my tax bill. Will my Stimulus Payment be direct deposited to the same account?

A. No, the account information used for an incoming Direct Debit payment to the IRS cannot be used as the account information for the Direct Deposit of the stimulus payment. People who choose Direct Debit to pay a balance due will receive their stimulus payments by paper check through the mail. [Updated 3/3/08]

Q. I plan to choose direct debit to pay my tax bill. I know my economic Stimulus Payment will not automatically be direct deposited based upon the Direct Debit information I've provided to pay my tax bill, but can I also enter Direct Deposit information to receive my Stimulus Payment by Direct Deposit?

A. Some tax preparation software will allow this, some will not. You will have to make this determination based on your own review of the tax preparation software you use. If the tax software allows you to enter both Direct Debit (Electronic Funds Withdrawal), as well as Direct Deposit information, doing so will allow your economic stimulus payment to be Direct Deposited. [New 3/20/08]"

Hey, I acted in a smart and responsible way when I decided AGAINST purchasing a home here in Southern California two years ago. I knew those interest only loans were fishy and I would never be able to afford the mortgage once it adjusted.

To now stand by and watch as the government bails many of those people out really pisses me off. They were desperate for a home, just like I was, and they made the decision to go ahead and purchase a home they had no business buying. I know the lenders used very sneaky tactics, but the bottom line is someone making $30k/yr has to know that they cannot afford a $700k home - no matter how the loan situation is spinned!!!!!!!!!!

In the past the IRS has *ALWAYS* sent checks. Statistically they found that after 2-3 months, too many people changed or closed their bank accounts. To send out checks to 130 Million taxpayers meant there was another problem--not enough capacity. With the printing schedule, the IRS was urged to send what it could by direct deposit and checks to the rest.

The IRS can't send the deposits through the 3rd party banks because there have no legal agreement to do so except for the ORIGINAL refunds. The IRS won't send the deposits to the bank account used for the direct debits because they can't ensure that's a valid account for the taxpayer.

Instead of being happy that their neighbor got a direct deposit and thereby reduced the total number of checks to be printed (moving that schedule up), everyone is complaining. It's FREE money. So you get a check, boo hoo.

As a pessimist, I'm waiting for all the posts from the people who couldn't to wait to file until February to claim the education credit, so they efiled in January without it and are now omplaining that the 1040x is not only slow (8-12 weeks, as publicized), but is now delaying their stimulus rebate as well (an amended return often adds to a tax bill, so they aren't releasing any refund until they are done processing the 1040X). Or the folks who discovered their ex-spouse filed their depedents and instead of mailing in a paper return with the dependents on it, they took the kids off the tax return, efiled, sent in an amended return and are now going to discover that the rebate is calculated on the ORIGINAL tax return, so they won't get the $300 per child.

Patience is a virtue. Instant Gratification is ruining this country.

Getting "free" money is getting penalized? Send it back in protest!

The IRS did not have direct deposit information on you if you owed. I don;t call that waging war.

Loving mother
You are very smart and the IRS is stupid. Apparently they prioritize people getting money back through direct deposit and forgot people who directly debited their accoutns to pay their taxes. You will probably wait like those people who got paper checks in the mail. Just remember that next year you may have to pay back around $80 plus the $600 or $300 you may get now. It is an economic stimulus packge not free money. They want you to spend what you have not earned yet. Maybe the iRS is smart afterall.

Below are the schedules for economic stimulus payments related to tax returns processed by April 15, 2008:

Direct Deposit Payments

If the last two digits of your Social Security number are:
Your economic stimulus payment deposit should be transmitted to your bank account by:

00 – 20
May 2

21 – 75
May 9

76 – 99
May 16

Paper Check

If the last two digits of your Social Security number are:
Your check should be in the mail by:

00 – 09
May 16

10 – 18
May 23

19 – 25
May 30

26 – 38
June 6

39 – 51
June 13

52 – 63
June 20

64 – 75
June 27

76 – 87
July 4

88 – 99
July 11

Some taxpayers may receive smaller economic stimulus payments than they anticipated. By law, the stimulus payments are offset to satisfy past-due taxes, student loans, child support and certain other debts.

I'm in the same boat as you and it makes no sense whatsoever to me either. They should've at least set up a hotline for people to call in and give a representative their account info so their check could be deposited.

It seems like that would save the IRS a lot of time instead of mailing the damn check.

Miah
I thought the rules were pretty straight forward. if your bank account was direct deposited then your stimulus check will be direct deposited. Otherwise it will be mailed as a check. Thats all there is too it. your bank account was never direct deposited, so your check will be mailed just like everyone else who's bank accounts were not direct deposited. you are not being punished, you will still get your check.

For someone who claims to be intelligent, you sure do whine like a baby

Clare
There was a section on the 1040 forms to input your direct deposit information. If you filled that in, even though you had to pay rather than receive a refund, you'll get your rebate direct deposit.

Did you fill in that section?

They must have it out for you. Our family makes over $50,000 annually also...but we get a stimulus check of $1800 direct deposited to our account..and this is after our refund of $2500. I swear when the IRS wages war....they really play dirty don't they?

You owed this year. Everyone who owed this year gets a paper check. Poor, middle class, and rich. Doesn't matter. Get over it and stop playing the victim.
