ebosgramma | Why is the refund so large? |
I am bothered by a question someone has asked. The person said she filed jointly with her husband and they were getting back $9000. Who gets a $9000 refund and why would anyone get that amount of money back? I just cannot imagine even if you claim zero all year but claim 2-3-4 children at tax time, have low income and qualify for every imaginable tax credit how can anyone get a $9000 refund? Additional Details Wow, this has been my first experience with Yahoo answers people being so rude. I was simply wondering HOW or WHY it happens. Not that I care about this one person specifically or think she did something wrong or illegal. |

You can have extra taken out above what they'd take if you claim zero. You write the amount on line 6 of your W-4 that you want withheld from each paycheck.
You too can get a huge refund. Request that they take out an additional $750 a month. Your refund will go up by $9000, which is the extra $750 a month times the 12 months in the year. Of course, your paycheck might be a bit anemic during the year, but you'll get a great refund! Doesn't sound like a good idea? I didn't think so. |

People are always rude here. Anytime someone can remain anonymous they have a need to strut their self imagined superiority.
To your question. They probably itemized and had more deductions than they thought. Also they probably decided to err on the side of caution and would rather get a large sum back than have to pay a lot out. It is obvious if this is what happened they need the services of a good CPA.
I always try to break even on my refunds as I can't stand to let the government hold my money all year. |

By paying in too much. It is possible they take out taxes for singles rather than as a couple. It is very easy to do. Not the smartest way to invest your money. Some people do this because they can't save money otherwise. |

well...lah-dee-freakin-dah for her, eh?
does it really matter? I mean, at least it's not like your cutting her a personal check right? LOL
Perhaps they had their w2s from work set up to deduct an addtl amt. My husband has his set up to take just $10 more out of each pay on top of whats already taken out and it DOES make a huge diff! (Not $9 GRAND of course, but it does add up)
Look at it this way...maybe she DID make a boo-boo...or lied...either way, they'll find her if she did either! |

Someone else's situation shouldn't really concern you...
There are other ways to prepay taxes in addition to withholdings... What about people that run a business and don't receive a paycheck? They have to pay estimated taxes quarterly...
It just means they overpaid their taxes to the IRS by $9,000. |

Don't worry about it - it doesn't concern you. |

Sorry for the rud eees...
Some people "over withhold" throughout the year. Some people are unable to control themselves enough to have a savings account, so they let the US Treasury use their money all year interest free. Then they file their return and get the money they really should've been paying their debts with all year and go blow it or pay the bills, they couldn't pay all year.
Back before Earned Income Credit, the IRS would actually fine taxpayers for having too large of refunds. In the past few years, I have had taxpayers who received notices from the IRS regarding withholding and didn't understand the IRS wants them to get closer to their true tax payments per year.
Your Question was valid, and there are many totally wonderful people who make up Answers, some people just get a little too full of themselves and don't realize not everyone is as smart as they are. |
