It could be one of two things.
1. You are not making the minimum required to take out federal taxes.
2. You or someone at work has written down exempt on your tax forms.
It is best to take care of this now and make sure it gets done. This happened to me and I ended up owing over five hundred dollars in federal tax alone at the end of the year. Good luck |

Ask to see what your W-4 says. Since they're taking out some, they're not trying to claim you're an independent contractor, and you're not working illegally "off the books". Sounds like something is wrong on your W-4. Could have been written wrong, or keyed into their payroll system wrong. You can fill out another one, and that will fix it for the future. What's already done is done. |

It is your responsibility to ensure that your employer deduct the proper amount of federal income tax withholding. Contact the bookkeeper of your restaurant and ask them how many exemptions are taken in determining your withholding. The chances are that you have signed up for too many exemptions or you signed up for advance earned income credit. There is also a chance that your pay hasn't been enough to trip the payroll deduction. If there aren't any errors, you can still instruct your employer to withhold additional income tax each pay period. |

It depends on how you filled out your W-4 and what the gross pay of your paychecks are. Depending on the status and number of allowances claimed on the W-4, you may not be making enough to even begin having federal tax withheld. Check with HR...see what's going on. Are you reporting all of your tips? That would increase the gross pay amount and may make a difference. |

If you are paid on a W2 they need to withhold tax. If you are paid as contract labor and received 1099, you will ahve to pay all of the taxes yourself; I have been paid this way for a few years, and it is totally legal in many cases.
On your W2 they have to withold social security and other taxes, but not your income tax if you are not expected to have to pay taxes. If you make less than about 5000 you won't have to pay any income tax, so they don't have to withhold it. That could be why it doesn't show up. |
