I agree that something needs to change and I do like the system they have in the States.
I would suggest that we are now given the option to pay our National Insurance fees into a proper health insurance scheme where the government are unable to `dip into` those funds. Hospitals should all be privatised so that they are dependant on those insurance companies.
In this way, the system is not open to abuse as it currently is - would you be happy to accept that you're paying into a system that we give for free to anyone and everyone? This country is slowly being drained of our resources and you just have to look at the NHS and DHSS to see how it is being abused?! |

Can I suggest you go to the states, one way tickets fine. |

because unlike america,we care for people,we pay our taxes to see a doctor /dentist/optician/ anything to do with our health.the american system is a complete failure, only the well off in society get medical treatment through a insurance they pay privately.i know we also do this in the u.k. but the majority use the n.h.s because it is just as good as anything else. |

Because it is an historic insitution providing healthcare free at the point of access for all citizens and is simply marvellous. Any UK citizen can recieve healthcare regardless of sex, age, ethnicity and social class. This is a wonderful thing, that we have a government who is attempting to support the populations' health. A healthier nation is a happier nation. |

because then it wouldn't be the NATIONAL health service, it would just be the health service, if you don't like it join bupa |

LMAO

Your question includes no justification as to the benefits of the American system. My experiences of American healthcare point to it being a very biased system, we Brits already pay for the NHS via taxes, it worked exceptionally well up until a few years ago when all kinds of private sector finance and syphoning of funds started to influence its smooth running.
Without wishing to appear provocative, privatisation has been the death of many great British institutions - 'for the people, BY the people' is what really works.
Our transport system is awful, our water supply is in turmoil, gas, electricity all suck. When things are run by private concerns, profit is the defining goal, not service. |

NO WAY. Do you want to have to pay thousands of pounds for your health care? I know I don't. America is not a good nation to follow for anything really. |

I don't think you really know what you are suggesting. Think about those who can do any job to pay off their medical bills because of being medically unfit to work. American system of health care doesn't help loads of people so no |

Because otherwise we'd have a two tier health system, whereby the rich stayed healthy and/or received world class healthcare, and the poor died young of treatable diseases, like they did in this very country only 50+ years ago. |

Because the UK care about there citizens more thats why they provide the NHS. Its not totally free thats why we pay national insurance. |

The NHS exists to provide expert health care to EVERYONE and NOT just those that can afford it.
In the USA, health insurance is expensive and not everyone can afford it. Those that can't end up going to what is called County Hospital.
If you think the service and cleanliness of the hospitals here is dire, you should see County Hospital in the USA. You want to go down the private healthcare insurance road do you. Well off you go then.
Once you have become seriously ill and hospitalised, your premiums will shoot up sky high. When you can no longer afford them, you will be off to county hospital as well. |

it is in a way, we all pay national insurance, which pays for the health service, the only difference is the NHS doesnt turn people on benfits away, so even though they pay no contributions, they still get treated. |

What and end up with only the rich affording treatment! |

before 1948 we had the private health insurance system , most working class people had to pay for any treatment they needed as and when they could afford it, hence my grandfathers brother died aged 6 because his mother didn't have the 2and one half pence that doctors visit would have cost. Do you want children dying in the future cos their parents are to poor to afford to visit the doctor? |
|

luddite

Then it wouldn't be the NHS any more would it? |

"Do you want to pay thousands of pounds for your health care?"
Well, actually you already do just this.
Average contributions £2800 pa!!
BUPA is cheaper because a privately run health service is more efficient than a state one. In fact no state run enterprise has ever been more efficient than a privately operated system. Do you remember what telephones were like under the GPO? In fact all the utilities were a DISASTER. |
