Quiet Thinker
Why shouldn't we pay more in taxes to help the less fortunate?
The best answer(s) will not only get the points but will be used in my presentation tomorrow.

Because we give to charities to take care of this for us. The government is the least effective deliverer of charity that I have seen. There are some charities that are very good at do these kinds of things.

some think that actions, or lack of actions should have consequences. That poverty is often a choice, made by bad life decisions, drugs, alcohol, teen pregnancy etc. and that therefore the "sinner" should suffer the result.

Abe Lincoln said it best:

"You cannot bring about prosperity by discouraging thrift.
You cannot strengthen the weak by weakening the strong.
You cannot help the wage earner by pulling down the wage payer.
You cannot further the brotherhood of man by encouraging class hatred.
You cannot help the poor by destroying the rich.
You cannot keep out of trouble by spending more than you earn.
You cannot build character and courage by taking away man's initiative and independence.
You cannot help men permanently by doing for them what they could and should do for themselves."

Give Abe the points. Contantly giving handouts to people not only discourages them from trying hard to make it on their own, but it encourages dependency. How would your bicycle skills be today if they never took off your training wheels? Besides, do you really want the government to be the sole source of people's fortunes? Have you ever gone to a DMV? Have you seen how slow, dysfunctional, and customer insensitive they are? Do you want more things controlled by the government? That is why I laughed at the notion of national health-care. The LAST thing I want is to be taken to a DMV-like hospital when my heart starts to give out. I'd rather you let me die than deal with all that.

It is all about finding the perfect balance in a dynamic economy, social, and political condition.

The basic understanding:

Imagine there are only two people in an economy, you and me, and a government who taxes personal income and distributes it to the less fortunate of the two. If I were somehow unable to work (disability or because of other issues), then the tax on your income will be transferred to me. The more income you make, the more money the government will transfer to me.

The problem arises when the tax % becoming "too high" for you. You will lose your motivation to work more, knowing you will give up some more $ on the tax. And if the government decides to increase the tax rate, you will become more discouraged to work hard and decide to either work less or move out of the economy. In either situation, both you and I would not gain anything as a result of an increase in government taxes.

However, the above explanation does not mean the government should not tax people at all.
Let say, as a result of government transfer of wealth from YOU to ME, I was able to improve my situation (education, better health, etc.). I can work and perhaps earn more than you. Because of that, you have an extra income from the transfer of wealth from ME to YOU and our economy is bigger and better.

Because you can't spend your way out of poverty. Most of the " less fortunate" are less fortunate because of their own decisions. ( poor money management) If you give them money, in one year, they still have no money. The only way out of poverty is a job not a hand out.

Maybe your question should read "Why we should help the less fortunate"I believe in helping the less fortunate because one day we all will need help in one way or another.Paying more taxes is not the answer to help the less fortunate.Education is the key along with many other factors that play a role.I think our goverment needs to attend to our problems before helping other countries with theirs.

the less fortunate or the less ambitious. I know plenty of people that look forward to their social security checks each month. And they actually feel they are entitled to it. Im not talking about retired older folks. Im talking about relatively young, fairly able people who figured out it was easier to sit on their butts and collect rather than get up each day and go to work. Comes down to one thing "If you give a man a fish he eats for a day, If you teach him to fish he can eat for a lifetime." If we keep giving it out, there will always be someone with their hand out to take the money. We should pay less taxes. The government gets plenty with the OVER taxed gasoline we buy and all the other ways they take our money. Each individuals hard work should not be rewarded by taking a percentage of his/her paycheck to support anything more than the basic infrastructure of the society in which we live. The hard working people of this country should not be forced to pay for the incarceration of so many criminals. They should make them earn their keep, ie, making license plates or what have you. The welfare of the truly impoverished is one thing we should try to help. Why is it that we live in a country with so much wealth and we let our government spend it on "the Arts" and "$600 dollar hammers" We let lobbyists "convince" our politicians to let certain laws and favors occur so that big corporations reap huge profits. Its this "corruption" of our politicians that is causing our country's demise. Stop the insanity. No New Taxes
