Why won't our 21 yr old daughter receive rebate from the IRS?
Yes, she is a dependent but she paid over a thousand dollars in income tax in 2007. Why would the IRS exclude college students from the rebate program?? They need the $!

SG
Here's my attempt at providing perspective. They didn't exclude college students. They excluded dependents.

And you don't get the $300 for her because she is too old. When parents receive $300 for a child, It is an expansion of the Child Tax Credit. Really, this is an attempt to explain the situation (not pour salt on the wound): you also don't receive a $1000 tax credit every year now, because the is over 16 years old.

She's in that middle ground where she's getting on her feet by earning money. The fact that she earned about $15,000 last year is a benefit to you. As each year goes by, you should have give her less financial support. And yet you are still saving on your taxes because you took an exemption for her.

But she is not earning enough to be completely on her own...so she doesn't qualify for the rebate.

< edit >
By the way, if she makes enough in 2008 that you don't claim her as a dependent on 2008 tax return, she will in effect get benefit of the rebate on her 2008 tax return when she files it.

xgurl3eb
dependants don't get a rebate, that's just the way it is. I'm a dependant who made over $3000 and i won't get any

If she is a dependant you are already getting a rebate on her in the form of a deduction on YOUR taxes.

You can only screw/cheat/manipulate the IRS so much, and then the rest of us say, hey...STOP

Dependents don't qualify. That's the way the law was written. Complain to your senator or congressman.

Of course they need the $$'s - who doesn't? Does that mean the government has to give away $$'s to everyone who'd like to have some?

One other question. If she paid over $1000 for income tax, are you sure she still qualifies as your dependent? If she is providing over half of her own support, she isn't your dependent any more, even if she IS a college student.

TaylorProud
If you claimed her as a dependent she won't get it, Parents get it only if they got the Child Tax Credit for Kids who were UNDER 17 years old on Dec 31, 2007

If you have a grant, or a financial aid then, there won't be a rebate because the Grants program is already helping her to pay most of her study expenses....

Because it clearly states that anyone below 22 years can't receive a rebate. Learn to read next time.

La Vie Boheme
Because dependents do not qualify. It says so right on the IRS website.

Time travler
You have to make over $3,000 to get a rebate check and you must file an individual tax statement.

crywater2000
cause u claimed her too. so u got $ 4 her already. next time let her file only. stop claiming her.

where is everybody?
she's too old. plain and simple. even if she filed her own taxes, she didn't make enough

maybe she do not qualify because her income last year was more than the require to qualify.

The rebate goes to the person who filed the tax return. If she didn't file a tax return and was declared a dependent on yours, then you'll get a rebate check, she won't.

Clare
If you claimed her as a dependant on your 1040 for 2007, the IRS won't give it to you if she was 17 by Dec. 31, 2007.

If you didn't claim her, and her earned income was at least $3000, I'd think she'd get it in her name.

you already received money back by claiming her as a dependent on your tax return. If she is a full-time student, she didn't pay taxes anyway.

She should get it back, i'm also still waiting for mine.

Usually though, and this is a bit of a bummer, they pay it at then end of the tax year, which is the end of March..so if she didn't get it back in March, she maybe find herself waiting until March 2009.

Still, it will be a nice surprise for her......

It's not that she was excluded for being a college student it's because she's claimed on another's taxes (yours). Had she filed as a non-dependent in 07', she would have received it.

If you qualify and she's listed as your dependent, you will receive an additional $300 for her which you could in turn give to her.
