Why would my boyfriend blame me for owing the IRS? Because he feels stupid ?
I have been seeing this guy for 8yrs ( yes , YEARS) I don't sleep with him , I dought I EVER WILL. He recently got caught be the IRS (I.R.S.)and initially owed them 28 thousand in back taxes....(I'm assuming for not filing anything at all) He makes 17 to 21.00 dollars an hour. He did not file for 2 yrs. He negotiated with them and now only owes 5,000 dollars. (yes , really ...I guess it CAN be done, lol) I had lost my job during that time (he and I do not live together) ,he decided to take care of some of my bills for some of that time. Six months after being 'caught' , he told me that it's because of me , that he owes ...because he apparently filed 'exempt' on his W-2.....to get a bigger paycheck and cover him and myself. I NEVER asked him to do this or pay my way. Although I a greatly appreciate his efforts, I think it's really nasty that he's blmaing me for this. Am I unfair? I really think he does not even know HOW to file his own taxes...and does not want to admit that to me. I think he is surprised that I file my own taxes and do it online every year...but I don't think he knows much about tax filing and maybe because he owed sooo much (originally) maybe he's NEVER ever filed.
Additional Details
Oh yah, I asked him why he did not file online , 1040ez...He said it's because he has too many deductions.....and that he makes too much to use the 1040ez form....(the other forms are longer, I know ,but not that difficult) .......on another subject ...he has invested online ...to make some extra bucks....maybe THAT is the REAL REASON he owes. I have actually seen the short letter of the the exact $ he owes, too ...he showed me ...it's 5,698dollars.....Says he has a phonebook sized amount of documents that he had to read and initial....maybe I'll do some sneaking around and read that pile....I hate be lied to.I hate being blamed because he wanted to take care of me,as he puts it.

This is not a tax question, it is a family and relationships question and the answer is you need a new boyfriend.

he has to have someone to blame and since you are the closest and probably the easiest, you got the brunt of it
frankly he sounds like a real jerk, and I cannot believe you have put up with this for 8 yrs

Bostonian In MO
He sounds like a clueless loser.

Unless he shows you a letter from the IRS that states that his Offer in Compromise has been accepted, the original debt was the $5,698. An OIC is exceedingly difficult to get approved and if he has the ability to earn $17 to $21 an hour there's little if any chance that they would accept his offer. Additionally the IRS has up to two years to consider an offer, during which time the taxpayer must continue making payments on the debt.

A more likely situation is that he did some trading and failed to report it. The IRS assumed that it was all gain and assessed tax accordingly. He provided the cost basis information and the IRS adjusted the tax bill. If he had a pile of trades, that could generate a pile of paperwork as each trade has to be reported separately.

Is there a particular reason that you've been with this chuckle-head for 8 years??

Caveat Emptor
If any of this is true, the fundamental question would be why are you even in this relationship?

His assumptions are ridiculous. Even if he COULD claim you he wouldn't likely be eligible to legally claim exempt, and since you don't live together he couldn't legally claim you even if he DID support you totally. And it sounds like he's also bs'ing you on the amounts, both on the $28,000 AND on the $5000 if it was really for 2 recent years, with income as you described. If he had large stock sales and didn't file, then it could be right since the IRS would assume in their initial assessment that he paid nothing for them, and his tax owed would go down considerably if he could show what he actually paid for them - that's not negotiating, just providing accurate information.

He's obviously clueless about taxes.
