IRS sends certified letters 30 -45 days after they had sent you a letter and you didn't reply in the allowed time.
Usually a certified letter is for unfiled tax returns and IRS sends the Notice of Defiency certified giving you 90 days to file the missing returns, or IRS will file for you. IRS will file as single, no exemption, no deductions other than standard deduction. The letter (LTR3217C) provides you with the summary of income (wage information reported to IRS) and if you don't file your own return then more likely to have a balance due.
Once you go to the PO to pick up your notice call the phone number listed on the letter. And be patient you may be on hold for a while.
If you don't want to call then just read the notice and provide IRS with the information requested with the the allotted time.

You got picked for an audit maybe audits are done randomly some get them some don't. I would not worry yet.

Correction on Kreig's response... audit letters ARE sent Certified Mail. Sometimes you may be audited for several years at the same time, and you will get a Certified letter for each year.

If you don't pick it up, the IRS will ensure that it is delivered, probably by an IRS agent knocking on your door.

I have to tell you this --- RUN TO THE POST MAN OR POST OFFICE and accept that letter ASAP!!

google "IRS certified mail" and see what you get.

This popped up and is worth a read.

Best of luck to you -- sounds like an audit or something.

there is never anything good in certified letter from the irs, they usually send out a few letters by regular mail before they send ouy a certified one. either way it is never good

Bibs
It would be better if you looked at the letter. If you do not pick up the letter, they will think that you refused service. You can not avoid a legal procedure this way. It may be an adjustment to your return. You can't hide from them. It may not be so bad. Go get your letter.

The IRS sends certified and registered letters for any number of reasons. If you did owe an unpaid tax debt, then the letter could be notice of a lien or levy, or some other collection action.

If you don't owe anything, it could be a request for you to submit a tax return or other information. Usually, audit letters are not usually sent via certified or registered mail.

The IRS does send certified letters in other cases too. For example, the IRS may send you a certified letter when it wants you to turn over property that you are holding for a third person who owes the IRS for unpaid taxes.

Best of luck,

If your tax return was audited and you did not reach an agreement with the auditor, IRS has to mail a Statutory Notice of Deficiency to you by certified mail. This is your ticket to go to Tax Court if you wish. If you don't respond, the additional tax will be assessed.

If you have a tax balance due and have not reached an agreement about paying it, IRS has to mail a Notice of Intent to Levy by certified mail before serving levies on your bank account or wages.

In either case, not picking up your certified mail is no excuse.

Another common cerfified letter is the Notice of Intent to Levy, which is usually a 1058C or LT11 letter.

The IRS uses certified letters when it is close to taking an action that results in seizure of property (such as a levy or lien) or an additional tax assessment, in order to conform to legal obligations.

There are four possibilities:
1. You have a balance due and did not pay it even when you were sent 3 previous bills spaced 30 days apart. Letter is marked CP504.
2. You paid your balance due but it was received within 10 days of the date on the letter. (Their computer system is 30 yrs old - very common. If your check cleared you are ok UNLESS your payment was misapplied to the wrong tax year.)CP504
3. You had an Installment Agreement to make monthly payments on a balance due and your monthly payment came in later than your promised date more than once. CP523.
4. You have a new balance due for an additional year.CP523.
