Will I get the new refund everyone is talking about?
My parents still claim me as a dependent, but I've been filing my taxes for about 7 years now. I know I'll get my regular refund, but what about that extra $600-$1200 that was just approved that everyone will get in April?

The last time they did something like this 5 or 6 years ago, my parents had claimed me as a dependent (I was also a student) so they got the rebate. I would expect the same this time around so you might want to make a deal with your parents that they will share it with you when they receive the money. Last time, I just got a postcard from the IRS saying that even though I had paid taxes from my part time job, I wasn't eligible for the extra refund because I had been claimed as a dependent. This is a good question though and not one that I have seen addressed in the articles I've read so far.

The details are still being hashed out so take any answers this early with a grain of salt.....I don't think anyone has the whole picture yet. However, the earliest the rebate would be sent out is June, not April.

If your parents are claiming you, you are not supposed to be able to claim yourself also -- that's illegal.

nope

No - you won't get the rebate if you are a dependent on your parents taxes. More than likely they will get an extra $300.00 for claiming you - maybe they will pass that along to you!

If you file taxes, you will get it.

Well you won't get $1200 because that's for couples who file jointly. Not sure about you getting the $600 - if they still claim you as a dependent then they'd be getting an additional amount for a child. I would think they wouldn't be giving your parents a check for you and then sending you one as well.

The info I can find only talks about income upwards, I wonder if there is a minimum income to qualify.

howfuzzywuzee
You must have earned at least $3000 in 2006 OR 2007, whichever year the gov't will be looking at......

jmoyz28
Nothing is set in stone right now but the latest I heard is 300 for each dependent you have up to 1200.

gambitgrrl
I don't think your eligible if your being claimed as a dependent by your parents.

Talk to your folks tho. They may get $300 because you are a dependent. Maybe they'll let you have it.

did you earn more than $3,000 in 2007 ?

kariljr
Your parents will get an additional $300.00 for you. However if you were over 18 and still in school (dependant) your parents and you would not receive the additional $300.00 even though they were still claiming you

How can they claim you? Not sure how that would work.
