Pikachu | Will I have send in a tax return? |
I only worked for a month in the year 2008, will I have to file a tax return? |

Dear Pikachu: Probably not! Look in box #2 and see if Federal Income Tax was withheld. If no tax was withheld you will not need to file unless you made over $5450 if you are single and your parents claim you. If there is a number in box #2, that will be your refund. Use IRS form 1040EZ and send it in.

Only if you wish to get a refund. |

Maybe. It depends on how much money you earned in the year, not on how long you worked. Even you worked for only one day, but made $50,000 on that day, then you would be required to file. On the other hand, if you worked all 366 days (2008 was a leap year), but only made $10 each day, then you would not be required to file.
In any case, you should file. If you are not required to file and file anyway, you may receive a refund and definitely will not owe money.
If filing would result in owing any money, then you are definitely required to file. |

Having to file a return depends on your total income for the year - not just your wages. For example, also consider unemployment income, investment income and self employment. The federal filing requirement for 2008 for a single person under age 65 (and not a dependent) is $8950. Even if you don't have to file, you can file to get your withholding back as well as any refundable credits you may be eligible for.

If you had any money withheld, you will need to file in order to get that money back. |
|

Been there, done that
 |
Yes, but only if you want any of your withholding returned to you. No sense letting the government having it to squander. File and get it back. |

short answer: yes
more complete answer: if you had anything withheld and are entitled to a refund, regardless of how long you worked |

The filing requirement for a dependent is $5450 or more of wage income (or wages plus $300 or more of interest income).
For non-dependents, $8950 of wages.
For self-employment, $400 of net earnings. |
