Chicky
:::sigh:::

Why? Why in the world would you do something so stupid?

You will be caught and like the others have pointed out already, in the long run you will have to pay penalties plus interest.

So now was it worth it?

Yes, you will because they check what is on your tax return to your w-2's...and then you will be in trouble. Big trouble.

Yes, 100% chance you'll get caught. The IRS compares every return against their records to verify that amount. There's a chance that wouldn't happen until after your refund was issued, and it could take a lot longer - if that happens don't think you got away with something, they'll bill you not only for the extra amount, but also for taxes and penalties. You could also be prosecuted for tax fraud, but probably wouldn't be.

Messing with the IRS on purpose is just plain stupid. Don't do it!

Yes, it's the government, they don't screw around with their money.No offense, but lying on your taxes is very stupid. The IRS can just look at your w-2 and see how much you paid.

Yes.There's just no other way of answering that questions than with a simple....yes.

Of course you will. Your W2 paperwork says so. The employer's paperwork says so. If you are self employed, they will know how much you gave them.

The real savings is in the deductions

Chris&Tet B
I'd say probably yes. but it depends on how lazy or incompetent the person checking is.

Tom K
Yes, you will get caught and will at least pay the difference plus interest and penalties. Prosecution for tax fraud is also a possibility if you really overdid it.

That's a no-brainer. Of course you will. The IRS already knows how much was withheld though it may take them upwards of 18 months to get back to you. They'll send you a CP2000 letter advising you of the discrepancy and demanding payment of the taxes due plus penalties and interest for late payment.

It's an absolute 100% certainty that they'll nail you, so just do it right from the beginning and avoid the hassle and expense.

IRS cross checks returns to W-2s. Plan on getting a bill.
