Will the flat tax leave us flat broke?

Given that it would have to be levied at around 27% to equal the revenue that the current graduated income tax raises, only the wealthiest of taxpayers would receive any benefit. When you remove a tax burden from one group -- the wealthy in this case -- you must either cut services or transfer the burden to another group -- the poor and middle class in this case.

A true flat tax would hit the poor very hard, hit the middle class hard, give a huge break to high income people, and do nothing at all about taxing the underground economy.
This is a good idea? I don't THINK so.

No, but that is a cute question!! You should get some extra points for it just because it was phrased cute.

If the flat tax were 100%, the answer would be "Yes".

However, the most likely flat tax would be a small percentage with few, if any loop holes, for the really rich to use to avoid paying. Also, it is really easy to create other mechanisims to return money to the poor, to make the tax system more fair overall.

A tax system that is so complicated - especially in the US - is a huge drag on the economy. Doing away with it, like many other countries around the world have, would be a great improvement.

If we spend less time and money doing taxes, I can spend more time "flat" on my back drinking margaritas!

Take care

Flattery will get them nowhere.

The flat tax will be paid by people who can't quite hit the high notes while singing the National Anthem. It will primarily affect Republicans because as we all know, Democrats tend to run late and are still at the concession stand buying hot dogs and beer when the game starts.

MWAP V4.0
Level with me. It will be tilted towards the rich.

But - I can fix it, I got big brass ones after all.

Wounded Duck
No, the war in Iraq has already taken care of that.
