With the national minimum wage is it a good thing or could it sometimes be seen as a fly way of getting more?
out of us in tax and ni just wondering what people think

Your thinking doesn't really make a lot of sense.

People on the minimum wage don't pay all that much in the way of tax and NI. And at the same time as introducing the minimum wage, the government actually cut the lowest income tax band to 10p, so ALL people on low incomes actually pay less tax, whether they are on the minimum wage or slightly above it.

Moreover, at the current level the government still subsdises most people on the minimum wage through Income Support, Housing Benefit, Tax Credits, etc.

The minimum wage is more or less a win-win for everyone. When people are earning, they spend more, which is good for businesses in the longer term. And when people spend more, they pay taxes like VAT or duty on beer and ciggies.

When it was introduced many people (the Conservatives, particularly). said it would mean lots of people lost their jobs, and inflation would rocket, making the prices of everything higher for everyone. So far this doesn't appear to have been the case at all.

I think its a crucial element to society... you can't rely on businesses to exercise good ethics in terms of paying their employees... Notice how massively profitable companies like McDonalds, Walmart etc employ people at the lowest rate they can get away with? People need to be able to earn a decent living without being worked to death.

its a good thing. it prevents people from being exploited and working for very little and inevitably living in poverty. also if there was no minimum wage, some people may be discouraged from working for a very little amount and decide not to work and to live off the government instead. this is the why minimum wage benefits the economy. besides, even if it did increase taxes, im prepared to pay a bit more so that people who cant get well paid jobs can still have a decent quality of life.

national minimum wage is sort of a good thing because you could have a skilled worker and pay him say £2 ph and have an unskilled worker and pay him say £0.50 ph and if you think about it the price of products in the UK means that you have to earn loads of money to buy what you want

Most of all a minimum wage hurts the poor. It takes away their motivation to learn new skills to serve others and increase their incomes. In the US free market I know of many minorities who make high incomes because they have chose to learn skills to serve others better. But the min wage encourages low income workers to not learn new skills because the govt takes from the rich (business owner) and gives to them so they can keep earning virtually nothing. The govt would help the poor so much more by offering a private mentoring/coaching/trainging program to learn how to better serve others, to make more. This would help the poor earn far more and improve our economy. But the US is rapidly moving to a Socialist economy so there would never happen as the Republicans also support a huge government that places burdens on people like the minimum wage. We can look forward to riots among the poor like in France among Islamic poor there because our government does not support free markets and personal growth to serve others.

Of course its a good thing. Too many employers of an unscrupulous kind (and there are a lot of them) would pay peanuts if they could get away with it. The only problem is that the rate is far too low !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Minimum wages are to resist the free movement of labour.
If there was no minimum wage everybody with a little bit of money would have someone from Eastern Europe to do the work around their house for £2.00 an hour. Employers would employ everyone from Eastern Europe to do menial tasks at £2.00 an hour and none of us locals would get a job.

Even with the national minimum wage, pay and conditions are worse than they were 20 years ago. You weren't expected to work weekends or evening as a standard part of your contract back then. For parents who can't get childcare its a nightmare; plus wages are still so low that people on low incomes with kids get tax credits. They don't pay tax.
Its disgusting that companies pay so little and expect the taxpayer to make up the difference, its disgusting that pay and conditions are so bad that the govt has to force companies to pay a fiver an hour.
People shouldn't have to put in a days work for pocket money, at the end of the day they don't have the security of owning the company.

I don;t know about the tax implications, but I do know the introduction of a minimum wage crippled a lot of smaller businesses which could nto afford to keep staff on. Although it is good for those in work it was not good for the people laid off becasue companies could not afford to put al their staff's wages up so cutbacks had to be made.
It has also affected the customer as many businesses have had to pass the extra cost on somehow and putting up prices for their services is often the only way to do it.
And, in some jobs the gap between lower level employees and those in supervisory amd managerial roles are closing as the minimum wage goes up and companies can;t afford for the rest opf their staff's wages to go up by the same percentage - leading to a loss in respect for these senior staff.
Also, I do not see why menial jobs such as cleaners and bin men etc should carry the same minimum wage as other more taxing jobs - what impression is that giving young people? Fail at school and get a job cleaning toilets becsue you'll get the same as if you go through college and get a 'proper' job! I feel a wage fit for the job is more appropriate than a sweeping minimum wage.
But that is only my point of view!
