If you apply for a job and the salary brackets are let's say:
20 - 23K and you mention to your potential employer you were on 22K, which is a possibility they will either offer you same or higher, depends on experience, but would they ask in the reference the previous employer about the salary? |

No but they will be able to tell by your P45 or P60 which has your previously salary on it.
If they are stating that the salary bracket is 20 - 23 then you have every right to ask for anything of those figures regardless of your previous salary. Ask for what you are worth!

If your application goes through an employment agency they are more likely to ask about previous salary as a standard question. Aside from this, private employing employers are more interested in your work record, i.e. your reliability, attitude to work, responsibilities and perhaps dates you were employed there. Salary is up for negotiation generally. |

You can never tell, if they use a standard form with a list of questions then more often than not they do ask the current salary. If they just send a letter saying that you are being considered for the position and requesting a reference then you will get away with it.
My advice do not lie! |

not necessarily, because they ask for a character reference and i have always lied about mine so that i would be offered a higher salary and never had problems. it depends though and you can ask for a written reference from your previous employer and present it to the new one without any salary details. this way they wont have to contact your previous employer. |
