You can claim the child as a dependent in the year it is born. If you have it this month, you can claim it this coming April. After Jan 1, 2009, you will have to wait until preparing your 2009 return. |

A baby born in 2008 is worth a thousand dollars in child tax credit right out of the gate; depending on income it could be worth up to about twenty five hundred dollars in EIC, also. In 2009 after the tax raises kick in this might not be so. |

Almost surely, having the baby in 2008 would give you an extra tax benefit, by being able to claim the child for 2008. |

In April you are filing for 2008 taxes. It must be born in 2008 to get the tax benefit. |

If the baby is born by 12/31/08, you can claim an exemption for him/her on your 2008 return. You will need to obtain an SSN for the baby as soon as it arrives. |
