PermanentMarker | Would a National Sales Tax be better or more fair than Income Tax? |
I think it would be more fair, and would be much harder for scofflaws to dodge. What do you think? Additional Details Hey, to then lady who left "Look it up" as a source - this was for discussion, not a homework assignment. Sheesh! |

Yes, it would. People should pay on what they spend not what they make. |

The biggest problem with a sales tax is that it is regressive. Poor and middle class people would end up being taxed a higher percentage of their income than the rich.
Like it or not, the "fairest" tax is a income based progessive income tax similar to what we have now. |

actually, every self-employed person could easily dodge a NST on all the business they can generate that pays in cash.
this is why there are two prices for services such as a plumber in France and Italy. One price if you pay by cheque or card, which includes all taxes, and a lower price if you pay by cash. |

Well for starts you do away with the progressive tax system that we make claim as having.
In reality it becomes a regressive tax system. As the poor then will pay taxes on 100% of their income and the wealthy would pay taxes on, I would hope, on somewhat less then 100% of their Income.
A family making say 20 or 30K is definetly spending ALL their money each year just to live. ASK the multi millionaire if they spent every penny they made this year. or if they have money in savings, trust funds or investments.
Yes, the wealthy pay alot more taxes, and investments create jobs so in the long run the country doesn't really lose out much either way.
If the intent of fair is actually to treat all equally as far as taxes then I assume we also are taxing contributions to charities, and any other forms of transfer of money from one to another, as otherwise we only are taxing monies spent to buy products in or brought into the US, so you will lose out on taxing the monies Americans use toward organization outside the US that do their business also overseas.
It will also be rewarding simially for those who make foreign investment and spend time outside the country spending their money overseas in foreign countries. Be incentive to take your vacations buy you 2nd homes out of the country. |

This idea is good, and it's bad.
Would I like to only have to pay tax on things I buy (This tax rate will be much larger than it currently is, obviously)? Yes, because then I can regulate the amount of tax I pay with planning.
Is it fair that someone that makes 10 times what I do pays as much, or less tax than me because he or she also regulates their spending? No way.
If you are fortunate enough to make so much more than others, you are indeed unfortunate enough to pay more tax than everyone else.
NOTE: To those folks who love Ron Paul a lot, and have recently been informed that Income Tax is tool of the IRS, which is a tool of the Federal Reserve, which is not run by the government, one thing: The government gave the Federal Reserve the authority to make such laws, therefore, the IRS is legal. The government did not come up with the Income Tax, but someone that they gave authority to did. If some people feel it is very illegal, then maybe you don't file returns anymore? I'm sure there is someone that will be calling you and you can talk it out with them. |

Depends on what you mean by fair. As far as harder to dodge goes, you have got to be kidding. I predict the number of "cash discounts" given out to shoot up tremendously under such a plan. |

No -
Someone who makes $2M a year should pay more tax than somebody who just makes $25K a year. But with a National Sales tax, theoretically they could pay almost the same. Very unfair. |

A consumption tax IS harder to dodge, though not impossible (the rich WILL do it. It can be done under the structured plan very easily.)
However this is a BAD consumption tax because it does NOT exempt necessities and thus will bankrupt the middle class by vastly increasing the rolls of Medicaid, welfare, and the bankrupt who will suffer this fate over medical expenses. There is NO way to get your med tax back--you get what the idiots said you should have spent on it--not what reality dictates.
Costs up 30%, the loss of the deduction for med expenses over 7.5% AGI, and the other costs that the ill need to spend more on (diet, supplements, transportation) means that kind of increase will end them financially and, as always, the burden falls on the soon-to-be-extinct middle class.
Check their lies out at:
http://www.fairtax.org/site/PageServer?p...
Pay particular attention to this:
"Why not just exempt food and medicine from the tax? Wouldn’t that be fair and simple?
Exempting items by category is neither fair nor simple. Respected economists have shown that the wealthy spend much more on unprepared food, clothing, housing, and medical care than do the poor. Exempting these goods, as many state sales taxes do, actually gives the wealthy a disproportionate benefit. Also, today these purchases are not exempted from federal taxation. The purchase of food, clothing, and medical services is made from after-income-tax and after-payroll-tax dollars, while their purchase price hides the cost of corporate taxes and private sector compliance costs.
Finally, exempting one product or service, but not another, opens the door to the army of lobbyists and special interest groups that plague and distort our taxation system today. Those who have the money will send lobbyists to Washington to obtain special tax breaks in their own self-interest. This process causes unfair and inefficient distortions in our economy and must be stopped. "
and this:
"Why not just exempt necessities from the FairTax instead of providing for a prebate?
The prebate is the most equitable and most efficient way to make the FairTax progressive. If the FairTax were to exempt necessities, the tax rate would have to be 20 percent higher than the FairTax rate with a prebate." that is question 4
So you can see, in their own words, IF necessities were exempted it would be yet 20% MORE! That means NECESSITIES DO NOT GET REBATED or PREBATED BUT TAXED--and who knows if that is a real 20% or a "FairTax" 20% which would be MORE? |
