Would you be willing to forfeit your income tax return for a bit in order to decrease the national debt?
Just curious. I know I would. We are spending this money at the expense of our children's futures.

That would be great! I'd get away without paying about $900 when I file, though I'd suspect that it would do squat as far as reducing the national debt.

BTW, the debt has grown to its highest level under the incompetent leadership of the Bush administration. This idiot actually CUT taxes during wartime -- the first time that that has EVER happended in the history of the nation! The INCREASE in the national debt under this clown is GREATER than the combined deficits of EVERY administration in the history of the nation!

The national debt is now around $38,000 for EVERY man, woman, and child in the country. So, if you're married and have 2 kids, your share is $152,000. I'm sure that Mr Bush would appreciate your check in the mail pronto as it would make him look somewhat less the economic fool that he is. But if you're talking about foregoing a $1,500 tax refund, forget about it. It's a pee-hole in the snow drift of the national debt.

The other side of the coin is that if all tax refunds were paid back to the government, the depressing effect on an already teeting economy would probalby lead to a major collapse of the economy and send it into a major tail-spin.

income tax is already your money, your just getting some of it back, the government has to stop printing more money and borrowing from china and other countries, printing more money does not solve the problem of the debt--so no i want my money

No. They'd just find something else to spend it on instead of using it to pay down the national debt. I need it more than they do.

did you know that when Bush Jr took office, we had a surplus of fund....all this talk about our children's future is misguided.

the government will always over spend no matter what. especially when there is money in the coffers.

jerry
No.
The national debt isn't really a big problem. It is just an accumulation of money the US government owes to other countries, but doesn't take into account the money that we are owed back from other countries (much of which is actually part of our counted debt).
I would rather the government decrease spending and give people MORE tax money back, rather than forfeit anything, to increase spending and growth. If we do that, we can produce more within the country and the National debt will naturally subside to more acceptable levels. I don't like the idea that the government thinks they can spend my money better than I can.

Brian J
No way.

Our national debt is high because people want the government to take care of them and give them "entitlements" but, don't want to pay for these benefits.

One of the other people's comments was that when George Bush took office, that we had a surplus. (Note that that was only a "paper" surplus, not a real surplus.) Nevertheless, even that calculated surpus was brought about by raising taxes on just the higher income people, not by raising taxes on everyone. The higher-income people weren't the ones that brought about the debt problem. It was all the other people (lower- and middle-income) who want the government to take care of them without having to pay for it.

So, if everyone's taxes were raised, I might be for the proposal you made. But, if they only plan to do it on the backs of just one segment of the population -- especially, the one that's not costing the government all this money -- then, no way.

Before 2006 I would have said yes.

Why the change of heart ?
Well I live in the Philippines for starters. Secondly and most importantly The IRS showed me no mercy in 2006. I had not filed my taxes for 5 years because I wans't concerned because in the past I always recieved $1,000 a year back roughly and didn't want to bother.

Then the IRS did my taxes for me and decided I owed them $14,800 in back taxes and interest and could legally garnish 2/3 of my military retirement pay.

They did so immedately and with no recourse for me to do anything except hire a cpa to file my taxes. In the meantime my retirement check of $1,500 a month was reduced to $680 a month for 18 months. Try living on that !

Eventually I got $8,000 back 24 months later.

If Hillary gets in office cause I trust the money will really be used that way. Bush would say certain things would happen & then just forget about them. I think McCane is just like him so I won't work much so I don't have to pay much cause I think the republicans are stealing the money.
