Would you be willing to pay more taxes if health care and education were free?

Yes for health care, but the education system needs an overhaul. We don't teach science because some people don't believe in it! We have one of the worst educational systems on Earth!

No. Having lived somewhere with free healthcare and (nearly) free education, it does not work.

Healthcare in the UK is in crisis. While it's adequate if you have a cold or even a broken arm, if you need expensive life-saving treatment such as a coronary bypass or organ transplant you may well die on a waiting list. The tax bite is nearly 50% higher than in the US -- more than the cost of private health insurance here in the US -- and the standard of care is lower for anything other than the most basic healthcare needs.

And while a university education there is a fraction of the cost of a similar one in the US, competetion for the few available seats in the entry classes is severe. The exams you must pass are mind-numbingly difficult and are manually graded by subjective opinion. And if you come from "working-class" stock you may not gain a seat even if you pass the exams with flying colors.

Pay more for something to be free? Somehow that sounds like a contradiction in terms - or like the ads on TV that offer to send you a "free" item, just pay shipping and handling.

Russ B
It is not like I would have a choice...but, if I did it would depend on the system. Meaning more likely not.

I have 10 clients from Canada...and all of them will cross the border to get medical care rather going on the waiting list.

Granted these are successful people that can now winter in Florida. But, from what I hear...you can wait for two or more years to see a doctor in Canada.

Oh...by the way...education is as free as it is gonna get. But, it isn't free to the parents.

Yes, I would. Why does American health care change as good as Canadan's health care? Health care is free at Canada

sea_blonde
Then it really wouldnt be free, just shifted to a Hidden catagory

Brian J
No.

When we in the U.S. get something for free (i.e., entitlements) at the same time, we seem to get very, very lazy.

I would prefer paying for it directly and managing it myself.

Willing? You would have no choice. That's why people are against it. Why should I pay for your education and healthcare?
