Would you claim somebody else's child as your dependant if the parent let you?

no you can't do that

only if i provided support for the child and was entitled to the dependent deduction.

if the IRS would let me then hell yeah, more money back!

bostonianinmo
Not unless I was legally entitled to do so. Anything else is tax fraud. That can involve massive fines and even prison time.

Contrary to what others have posted here, it CAN be legal to claim an exemption for a child that is not yours IF the child lived in your home ALL YEAR and received more than half of their support from you.

healthykidnow
I know many that do but I never would...ask some stars about tax fraud! hehe

No I wouldn't,my sister's boyfriend claimed one of her kids one year and then the next year when he didn't claim him it somehow came back to bite him in the ***,I don't know exact details, but I know he wasn't happy about it!

athena9980
unfortunatly there used to be a loop hole that someone could claim someone elses dependant as long as they lived in the same house hold. the IRS clamped down on that last year. only parents, legal guardians, or adoptive parents are allowed to claim a dependant.

Judy1
No. It's illegal, and can get both the parent and the claimer in big trouble.

NO and I wish others would not. The fact that many do makes me angry.
