Would you report someone for not paying tax?
Imagine someone you knew worked cash in hand. He doesn't claim any benefits, but doesn't pay tax either? Would you report him for non-compliance?

Thanks for your input.

Yes, i,d like to report The Queen, Phil the Greek and Charles and Anne !!!

walker
no more power to them, paying taxes is like giving a drunk more booze.

Sarah Townen
i think for me it depends
if it was someone who could barely make ends meet and was really trying, then i'd probably leave it alone

but if it was someone well off and not contributing in anyway, then i would probably report it

No... I'd keep my nose out of their business. That person is just trying to make do with what they can. Everyone does bad things sometimes.

Yes, have done several times, and had the clout to do something about it. But then I'm prejudiced. It's not a victimless crime. The Government aim to make so much money from taxation. If someone cheats, honest taxpayers have to make up the difference.

No, most people wouldn't pay taxes if given the opportunity!

quizzard123
Absolutely. We all have a duty to pay taxes to support the government. He doesn't claim 'benefits'? So he doesn't use the roads, he doesn't use the health care system, he doesn't benefit from police or fire, or the armed forces?

Damned right he benefits, and he has a civic and MORAL duty to pay his fair share.

Without access to his correspondence with the revenue ,how could you be sure he is non tax compliant , There were a few years I worked and did not pay tax quite legally ,as expenses and tax breaks etc let me ,

stephan870
Of course not least hes working good on the man I say. The Government waste it on their 2nd homes anyway and will give it to the people who are benefit cheats.

Not unless I'm getting money for it

Yes I would report them. The rest of us also work hard and have to pay tax - why should they get away with it? They are not paying their share so more will be taken from the rest of us in the long run, to pay for services such as hospitals & schools.

The Revenue might eventually catch up with him but if it is reported it will be sorted out a lot quicker and cheaper - leaving more money to be spent on our services.

If the employer is paying cash in hand then they are probably doing the same to other employees. This means their wages bill will be lower than it should be - this is unfair competition to other similar businesses which might but them out of business because they doing things right!! This then puts other people out of work, and in turn even less tax is being paid for hospital and schools!!

Just mind your business. You don't know the mind set of people or who might be packing a gun or as it is in the UK a knife. I'm in NYC and people here just mind their business. You should do the same.

Derrick T
I would if they've been doing it for a while and they don't have a good reason.

If it was a liberal I would!!

I would report his employer as it is the employer's repsonsibility to deduct tax and NIC.
If the person is working for himself, then I would report him to the local tax office (by letter).

itsn ot your life, not your business. dont waste your time focusing on someone elses life, try to better yourself and make sure that you are doing the right thing yourself.

I am amazed at the number of people on here who don't want 'the government' to benefit from getting the right amount of tax in. Let's be clear about this
1. The government represents all of us. It does not collect taxes so that they can disappear into a black hole, but to spend on the services that we all use - roads, defence, the health service, education etc.
2. We all suffer if other people avoid paying their fair share of tax, either because there is less to spend on essential services, or because we have to pay more to get those services.
So all of those of you who say 'It doesn't affect me' are wrong.
