Wrong social on w2?
does anyone know what forms need to be filed.. or the procedure when your ss# is wrong on your w2? my employer says that they cannot correct it.

Rob
Contact the employer first, they MUST correct it, with you and with the IRS forms that they have to file. If they don't provide you with a corrected W2 by the 15th of Feb, Contact the IRS at 1-800-829-1040. and file a W2 complaint, they will advise you how to file.

Zebra4
Your employer absolutely can and should correct it. Whoever told you otherwise probably just didn't know how to issue a corrected W2, but it is definitely their mistake to fix.

Your employer issued your W2, they should be able to issue a corrected W2. When you originally got your job, they had you complete the necessary w9 and that is the ss# they should have used.

If you employer balks, contact the IRS immediately.

been there done that

Your employer made the mistake, they MUST correct it. Call the IRS and report them

Employer lieing - they can.

Your employer is required to correct it. Report them to the IRS if they refuse.
In any event, file your tax forms using your correct SS, and report all your income. You will probably never hear from the IRS, but if you do you can explain it to them, and it will be okay.

Amy_S
you should try to call the IRS and have them resend it. Try irs.gov

txkathidy
Notify the issuing company that the number is wrong and supply them with the corrected number. They should provide you with a correct W-2.

The IRS gives companies and other employers a month to send in the W-2's and 1099's after they have been given to the recipients so that mistakes like these can be corrected.
