You get penalized on your taxes if you're married?

xtraheavy01
No. i thought you get a benefit.

1)you get lower rates as married
2)you get a higher standard deduction
3)the only downside is that you have to report both incomes. which may put you into a higher income tax bracket

No you don't. Take a look at a form 1040 and notice that a married filing joint return just doubles the standard deduction amount from 5450 to 10900. Same with exemptions and so on. Never listen to "they" and you will be better off in the long run.

Yes and No.

About 4 years ago, the government revamped some of the basic tax code.

Now, the standard deduction for MFJ is double that for single. The lowest tax brackets are now double as well. So for lower tax brackets married couples with no children and no credits, the tax pretty much comes out the same or better than if they remained single.

The marriage "penalty" (where you pay more than if you had filed as single) comes in with higher incomes or if you are poor with children. Separately, a single woman with kids and low income may have qualified for EIC; married with a spouse who also works, she probably won't. However, EIC was never intended to encourage shacking up.

For low to middle income, no. For high incomes, if BOTH people earn a high income they might pay more tax by being married - if only one of a couple has a high income, they'd pay less.

4 years ago Congress granted "relief" from, not elimination of, the marital penalty.

Generally, if you are a typical taxpayer, ie your AGI for MFJ is under approx $63000, married or unmarried wil pay the same tax. (EIC is an exception).

Over that amount, there are so many nuances in tax law where married people get toasted worse than 2 singles with the same aggregate income that it would make your head spin.

Why would the IRS "penalize" married couples?? If you use Married Filing Joint as your filing status, your tax rate is lower than filing Single. So I'm not sure what you mean by penalized on your taxes. You only get penalized by the IRS if you failed to file a tax return timely, failed to pay your taxes, and errors on your tax return.

Only if you file your taxes wrong!
