could they take your social security when you leave home?
My friend wants to move out of her apartment; she has a great family and great parents, but she is 30 and her parents are not the easiest people to live with. She is on social security and her parents told her job not to give her too many hours so she would not loose it, so she does not have much other income. HOWEVER, the social security is more than enough for rent. The problem is, her parents take the checks, UNDERSTANDABLY, as rent, but now, she wants to move out and her parents said if she moves out she wont get it. THE PROBLEM is, could her parents make social security keep it from being forwarded to her address if she moves? I heard you could change your address, but could she stop that or are her overprotective and loving parents just brain washing her. She is a hard working woman, with a learning disability, but she has a college degree but getting a job is hard with her overprotective parents and if she could keep her SS she could have her rent.

if she has a college degree, she certainly is capable of living on her own
if the SS checks are made out to her and sent to her address, she only needs to have the checks sent to a new address
she is an adult, her parents unless they have some kind of guardianship over her affairs have nothing to do with it

She can have it sent to her new address unless she is not capable of managing the money herself. If her parents continue to receive the money, then they are required to spend it on her needs (education, housing, etc.); they are not allowed to keep it for themselves. If they are not willing to receive the money and spend it on her needs, and it cannot be sent to her, then social security will find someone else to be the "representative payee" instead of her parents.

She will not lose the money. It will still be sent to someone. If it is not sent to her, then it will be sent to someone else who will be required to use it for her needs, including rent. If her parents are not willing to abide by those rules, then it will not be sent to them and will be sent to her or to someone else who is willing to follow the rules.
