nc | how did you Move off base? |
Okay so our lease is ending on the home we are renting on base in august and my husband wants to move off base but i personally dont think we have the money to, but he says the bank well give us our BAH one month in advance in check form to give to the realitor of the new home.. To me this doent make sense because ive always had the money upfront for deposit and 1st month .. I could be wrong but has anyone ever moved off base did you have to save up on your own before you moved or did the bank help |

Your hubby must be right out of AIT or his services equivalent. The prior poster is correct I was stationed in the UK and was able to move off base because of a shortage of on base housing. If his CO doesn't sign off on it your staying on base. The money comes in his check and it's not a ton of cash either, if you factor in having to drive on base to shop, go to work, and the argo of dealing with landlords close to a military base why would want to move? |

have no idea what bank your husband is 'banking' on
the quarters allowance you would receive if you moved off base is paid through the military pay, not a bank
and if there is no shortage of housing on base it is very possible they will not pay the housing allowance if you move off base |

Your bank has nothing to do with your BAH. As soon as you clear the on-base property, BAH will start being paid. (If you're in one of the new commercially built homes on-base, you're already collecting BAH although it may then be withheld from his pay to pay the contractor that owns the home.) At any rate, you won't see that in his net pay until the end of the month of the move-out in most cases. If you move out very early in the month you might see it in the mid-month pay.
If you don't have the money to lease on off-base property then you should seriously reconsider moving. Typically you'll need two months rent up front -- the first month's rent and the security deposit. (Some areas require first and last month up front so in those areas you'll need 3 months up front to move in.) Don't forget that you may need substantial utility deposits as well.
It might be possible to borrow the money from your bank or get a few months advance BAH from the military, but keep in mind that that must be paid back. Taking the pay advance won't cost you anything in interest but it generally will need to be paid back in 6 months and will be docked from his pay automatically. Be sure to run your budget numbers first to be sure that you'll have enough to cover expenses! And keep in mind that his commander will have to approve the advance, and his First Sergeant (or Chief) may want to see your budget before signing off on it. |
