No way to say. Military pay is highly complicated.
Taxes depend upon your filing status, number of dependents, etc. Military pay is comprised of base pay ($1,622 for an E-2) which is taxable, plus housing and subsistence allowances if you don't receive quarters and rations in kind. The housing and subsistence allowances are not taxable.
The housing allowance depends upon where you are stationed as they are pegged to local housing costs and can vary widely. For example the housing allowance for a single E-2 in Marin County, CA is $1,509 a month while at Lemore NAS, CA it's only $765 a month. If married, the rates would be $1,920 and $1,023 respectively.
The subsistence allowance is about $324 a month.
As a rough guesstimate for an E-2, the net pay would be around $1,394 on the base pay plus whatever BAH and BAS you were entitled to (if any) based upon filing your W-4 as Single + 1 allowance. If your home state has an income tax that is assessed upon military personnel, the net would be lower. There are other deductions as well, such as for Servicemember's Group Live Insurance (varies based upon the amount of insurance that you carry) and a small mandatory deduction for the Soldier's and Sailor's Home.
That's just for starters. There are other pays that you may qualify for based upon your MOS and duty location. Additionally, if you are stationed in a hostile fire pay zone, your base pay is not taxable plus you receive an additional $225 a month in hostile fire pay. |
